Fragments of Life: Community Art Project Opens Conversations Around Death, Dying and Renewal with Springhill Hospice

Springhill Hospice, in collaboration with Skylight Circus Arts, and funded by Dying Matters (Hospice UK), has delivered a powerful creative Wellbeing project titled “Fragments of Life”, offering older members of the community a safe and supportive space to explore themes of life, death, and renewal through collaborative art.

The project brought participants from Skylight Circus together to create a large mosaic artwork inspired by the natural cycle of life, structured around four symbolic themes: Birth, Growth, Death, and Renewal.

Each stage of the mosaic reflects a journey through the human experience:

  • Birth is represented through sunlit, snow-capped peaks and birdsong, symbolising new beginnings, clarity, and fresh air of possibility.
  • Growth flows into a meandering river, capturing life’s twists and turns, set against fertile green landscapes.
  • Death is expressed through choppy waters settling into calm, with autumn and winter imagery reflecting rest, release, and dormancy.
  • Renewal shows life beneath the soil, where unseen nourishment supports new shoots reaching toward a new day.

Participants were encouraged not only to create but also to reflect and talk openly about death and dying in a supportive environment designed to reduce fear and stigma around end-of-life conversations.

Feedback from participants highlighted the emotional and personal impact of the project:

“Life is about colour. As a man we are raised in dark colours (black, navy and grey). Yellow is my favourite colour so I picked the board with the sun on it.”

“It’s like life; many pieces may be broken but when they’re put together, it creates something beautiful.”

“It was so relaxing to choose the colours and create”

The Wellbeing and Supportive Care Service at Springhill Hospice continues to support people with palliative and life-limiting conditions, as well as those affected by bereavement, through a range of creative and therapeutic programmes.

A spokesperson for the project said, “the initiative demonstrates the value of creative engagement and creating a legacy for years to come”.

Fragments of Life shows how art can open doors to conversations that are often difficult to begin. Through relaxing, tactile creativity, participants were able to reflect, share, and find connection in shared experience.”
