“I choose to volunteer at Springhill Hospice because it is a charity that holds a special place in my heart. They provided compassionate care to both my uncle and my grandma during the final stages of their lives, and I will always be grateful for the kindness and support they showed my family.”
Volunteering
Bring comfort, connection and joy to local people when it matters most.
At Springhill Hospice, volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Their time, compassion and dedication help us provide round-the-clock care, comfort and connection to people across our community.
From offering a listening ear to helping families find moments of peace, volunteering here is a chance to be part of something truly meaningful. You wonāt just be giving support, youāll be giving hope to the patients and families that need it the most.
Why volunteer at Springhill?
People volunteer for all sorts of reasons. Some want to give back, some want to meet new people, and some are looking to grow in confidence or learn new skills. But every single volunteer brings something unique, and every one makes a real impact.
Volunteering at Springhill means:
- Supporting your local community in a powerful, personal way
- Gaining new experiences, skills and friendships
- Being part of a warm and welcoming team
- Knowing your time truly matters
“I started volunteering in January 2025 and itās been a breath of fresh air to me. Doing something I enjoy and being able to help the Hospice gives me enormous pride and satisfaction.”
“Volunteering gives me the chance to give back, to keep my brain alive in retirement and to contribute to the development of an essential service for our town”
“Joining the team at Springhill and feeling that you are making a difference is lifechanging; you learn so much about yourself and other people”
Our volunteer roles
We offer a wide range of roles based on your interests and availability. From helping out in the Hospice or out in the community, to behind-the-scenes roles that keep everything runningāweāll help you find the right fit.
Community Champions
If youāre active in your community, but don’t always have the time in your schedule to volunteer, and want to do your bit for the Hospice, becoming a Community Champion may be for you! Help out by handing out flyers, promoting our events in your area, putting up posters and sharing us on your social media pages.
Gardening, maintenance, housekeeping & catering
Our award-winning gardens can be a much-needed place of calm and reflection for patients and their loved ones, so itās important they are kept in good condition throughout the seasons. We need help with basic DIY and maintenance across our Hospice buildings, shops and with our cleaning and laundry too. Try your hand at creating beautiful floral arrangements or help our Catering Team with tasks in the kitchen.
Driving
Our Volunteer Drivers and Driversā Mates undertake key services to keep the Hospice running, from providing transport for our Wellbeing and Supportive Care patients to supporting deliveries across our network of shops.
More of a people person?
You can provide a warm welcome to patients, visitors and staff as a Volunteer Receptionist, ensure a steady supply of refreshments and hospitality for our patients and their loved ones, or, if you are appropriately qualified, join our team of Volunteer Counsellors or our Spiritual Care Team.
Behind the scenes
We have volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes helping to keep the Hospice running. If youāre more āat homeā at a desk, confident on the phone, using a computer or a whizz with databases we have opportunities in our Admin, Finance and Fundraising Teams.
Patient and visitor support
Volunteers provide invaluable help to our clinical and nursing staff, supporting patients with everyday activities. These roles might be on our Inpatient Unit or in Wellbeing and Supportive Care and can include:
Our Community Volunteers support patients and their loved ones in their own homes, providing a valuable few hours a week of companionship with a patient, allowing loved ones and carers a well-earned break.
Patient Companion (Inpatient Unit)
The role of the Patient Companion Volunteer is to support the structure and organisation of the In-Patient Unit to ensure that every patient and their family members have a positive experience.
Wellbeing and Supportive Care
Wellbeing and Supportive Care provides a happy and welcoming environment for patients to meet and talk to others with similar illnesses, while receiving care from nursing staff. Volunteers help make patients feel comfortable and at ease by serving refreshments, talking with them and even playing games!
Complementary Therapist
Working alongside our Complementary Therapist, providing a variety of therapies to meet the needs of the patients in Wellbeing and Supportive Care and on the Ward.
Creative Therapist
Working alongside and within a small team to support the Creative Therapist delivering a broad range of arts, crafts and therapeutic group work to patients.
Bereavement Support
We have various vacancies for bereavement support volunteers including a weekly Walk and Talk Group, a weekly Support Group and weekly one-to-one Telephone Support. We also have vacancies to support community social groups held in venues such as cafeās and libraries. The role would be as host, ensuring group attendees feel welcome and offering support, where required, in completing paperwork. Training for these roles is provided by the Hospice.
Retail support in shops
We have shops across the borough, selling donated and new goods. We have customer service roles on the shop floor and non-customer facing roles including sorting donations and product research. We also have other opportunities in retail including being a driverās mate on our van, PAT testing or moving stock in our Warehouse.
Fundraising and community engagement
We have many fundraising events throughout the year and always need plenty of willing helping hands to make things run smoothly, and to maintain our profile in the community. These occasional volunteer roles are ideal for those who may not be able to commit to regular hours.
Corporate support
Local businesses across the borough are amongst some of our most valued supporters. Fundraising for Springhill can be an excellent way for businesses to take part in team building, either through a direct visit to the Hospice, or taking part in a fundraising activity.
Bring something new to the table
We are always open to new ideas and to new skills that volunteers can offer, so if you think you can help us in a different way please get in touch.
