What is the Inpatient Unit?

  • Anyone over the age of 18 who is living with a life-limiting or non-curable illness can access this care
  • Our Inpatient Unit is a friendly and welcoming place with 16 beds within Springhill Hospice
  • Patients are admitted under the care of the Medical and Nursing Teams for symptom control, assessment and end of life care
  • The Inpatient Unit is a short stay facility, this helps us offer Specialist Palliative Services for as many people as possible
  • All patients are cared for by our experienced medical and nursing staff

What does it offer?

  • Each patient is assigned a named nurse. This nurse will talk to the patient and their loved ones to help plan their individual care until they are discharged. They will even help coordinate their care if a patient is discharged back to their own home or nursing home
  • Our Inpatient Unit has a high staff to patient ratio which allows us to give the time needed to care for our patients in the way they deserve
  • Whilst staying on the Inpatient Unit, patients have access to Complementary Therapies, Wellbeing, Psychological Support from one of our Counsellors and support from our Spiritual and Pastoral Care Co-ordinator
  • We encourage visits from patient’s loved ones
  • We are happy if people wish to help care for their loved one during those visits
  • Visits are allowed at any time and we don’t limit the number of visitors; if we feel a patient is getting tired though, we might ask you to take a break to let them rest
  • Children are welcome and we have a small play area with toys, books, games and a computer available for younger visitors. We kindly ask that those under the age of 16 be supervised
  • Pets are also welcome to visit; in fact, we find this can be very therapeutic for our patients. Please feel free to talk to a member of the nursing team if you want to visit with a pet

Facilities for families and friends on our Inpatient Unit

  • Springhill has two family suites, each with two hotel-style twin bedrooms offered on a priority basis to families and friends of inpatients who are at the end of life to use for free overnight stays. Simply ask a nurse if you wish to use this service.

  • Both rooms are en-suite with low threshold showers

  • We provide bedding, towels and toiletries and may be able to help with other items for stays at short notice
