About Us

At Springhill, we believe hospice care is about living well, right until the end. It’s about finding comfort and joy in small moments, feeling heard, feeling safe, and knowing you’re not alone.

Whether you’re coming to us for support, advice, or simply someone to talk to, we’ll meet you with warmth, dignity and respect, wherever you are on your journey. We’re here for you, your loved ones, and our entire community.

We’re a team of doctors, nurses, healthcare professionals, counsellors, volunteers, fundraisers and friendly faces who care deeply about making a difference.

Whether you’re living with a life-limiting illness, caring for someone who is, or grieving the loss of a loved one, we’re here to support you through it. With expert knowledge, deep compassion, and a genuine desire to make a difference, we offer care that looks after the whole person, not just the illness.

We believe that everyone deserves the best possible quality of life, no matter their circumstances. That’s why we listen carefully, offer choices, and support you in ways that feel right for you.

Our services reach beyond the walls of the hospice, into homes, hospitals and communities, so that more people can experience the warmth and reassurance we’re known for.

This is what drives us every day: to make every moment matter, and to be a place where care feels personal, not clinical. A place where you feel seen, heard, and never alone.

Our Story

Springhill Hospice began with a powerful belief: that everyone deserves to be cared for with dignity, compassion and love.

In 1983, that belief sparked a movement, launched by our founder Margaret Geoghegan MBE and powered by the community of Rochdale. Over the years, thousands have helped shape what Springhill is today: a place where expert care meets heartfelt connection.

Some highlights from our journey so far:

1983–1989

The dream begins. A community fundraising appeal leads to the building of our hospice, which was officially opened by HRH Princess Anne in 1989.

1991–1994

Our Day Hospice opens, extending our care to those who don’t need inpatient support.

1997

We became the first hospice in the country to receive Investors in People status—and launched the Springhill Lottery to help fund our work.

2005–2014

Services expanded with a 24-hour advice line, Hospice at Home, bereavement services and a specialist palliative care team in the community.

2019

We celebrated 30 years of care and began looking ahead to what the next 30 might hold.

2023

We launched our Specialist Dementia Garden.

2024

We celebrated 10 years of our Community Services and launched our lovely Makin Memory Tree Launch.

Today, Springhill is more than a hospice. It’s a network of support, reaching people wherever they are, whether that’s here with us, in their homes, or out in the community. We’re embracing new technologies, widening access to care, and finding better ways to support people’s emotional, psychological and spiritual wellbeing.

As we move forward, we’ll continue listening, learning, and adapting to the needs of our community. Our goal is simple: to make sure that no one faces serious illness alone, and that everyone we support feels heard, valued and truly cared for.
