Education and training


 The Education Team are based at Carders Court in Castleton. This spacious and superbly equipped education facility allows us to offer further support and education to those that work in the health & social sector.

Our education unit boasts 2 large classrooms (large enough to host classes of 25 comfortably), a well-equipped library and a practical skills room with equipment to assist with mandatory training, additional courses and learning. The unit has no steps and male, female and disabled toilets.

Our mission
Health and social care staff must demonstrate kindness as well as the skills, confidence and the application of knowledge in the care of those with Palliative Care needs. We endeavour to facilitate a culture of care that is compassionate, recognises the individual needs of the person and their families, as well as being open and transparent.
We understand that learners have different levels of ability and learning styles. We make every effort to assist attendees to enjoy and expand their knowledge and skills whilst attending our sessions.
The Education Team are committed to making the sessions interesting and useful, by encouraging group discussions, practical tasks and reflections.

Additional Support for Students
Springhill Hospice's Education Team welcomes students with additional support requirements and/or disabilities and will make every effort to support their needs. The program has been designed to incorporate a variety of ways in which you can access the information you need to undertake learning around each topic, and we will support you to complete the program. If you require any additional support or guidance please contact us and we will do our best to support you with your learning experience.

Palliative Care Passport

Springhill Hospice Education Unit, Carders Court

The Springhill Palliative Care Education Passport (SPCEP) provides a solid set of holistic knowledge and skills for all grades of staff. It comprises of 6 modules, each exploring different aspects of Palliative Care.  The SPCEP is a course not only endorsed by Skills for Care, but also award winning! To complete the Passport we ask you to attend all 6 Modules, plus a 1.5 hour Oral Health trainings (dates for Oral Health will be provided separately). Please book places to attend the Modules by emailing We ask you to attend Module 1 first, the others can be attended in any order. Each Module, a face to face training, lasts 4 hours. There are 2 options for Module 4, one is aimed at Non Registered Nurses, the other at Registered Nurses, just choose the option appropriate for your role. These 2 sessions will run at the same time. Please advise which you would prefer to attend when booking places. There are also 2 options for Module 5, as per Module 4 above. The timing of the morning sessions (AM) are 9am to 1pm, afternoon sessions are 1pm to 5pm.  We will ensure there is a lunch break for those attending the Fast Track sessions. We promote person centred care by delivering learner centred education. Costs: These sessions are free of charge for those who work within the Heywood Middleton and Rochdale area. For those outside of this area, the SPCEP can be completed for a charge of £30 per session or £150 if all six sessions are paid in advance.  Whether you're a healthcare assistant or a General Practitioner... we'd love to have you on board. Please not: Workshops are free for those working within Heywood, Middleton or Rochdale but a fee of £60 is applicable for a full day workshop, for anyone working outside these areas.
