Springhill Hospice holds commemorative celebration for the VE Day 80th Anniversary

A flag was raised, a wreath was laid, a poem was read and the bugle was played in honour of VE Day at Springhill Hospice. Patients and staff gathered together at the front entrance of the Hospice to pay tribute on this historical day.

Springhill’s Poet in Residence Paul Jenkins, began the ceremony by reading an original poem written especially for the day, called ‘The stories live on’. Sergeant Martin Brindley of the Cadet Force then raised the flag, for all to see far and wide. The main organiser of the event; Hospice Receptionist Viv Hardaker, laid a wreath to rest below the flag, with a candle lit beside.

A solemn silence followed as John Armbrister played ‘The Last Post’ on the Bugle, giving the crowd a chance to remember and reflect on what this day represents and the sacrifices made. Brian Douglas from the Royal British Legion and Major Edward Hardaker from the 75 Engineer Regiment – Warrington were also in attendance.

CEO Sam Wells said “This is a chance for us all to reflect, and thank those that made the ultimate sacrifice, for the freedoms we enjoy today. It’s a chance for us to remember their loved ones, and it’s a chance for us to thank those who continue to protect our freedom”.

The ceremony may have finished outside, but inside there were tables lined with delicious homemade cakes and tea for the celebration to continue into the day; a treat for staff, patients and the soldiers we were honoured to have join us.

Springhill Hospice have signed the Armed Forces Covenant and proudly support those who serve.
