Legacy Giving

As an independent hospice Springhill is responsible for finding the necessary funds in order to ensure that it can maintain, develop and extend the vital services it provides, free of charge, to patients and their families.

Why include Springhill Hospice in your Will?

Leaving a legacy to Springhill Hospice means, simply, that your beliefs will not die with you. It is your opportunity to help local people with life-limiting illnesses live out their lives in comfort and dignity, with a gift that you may not have been able to afford during your lifetime.

Why your legacy will make a difference?

Legacy giving is extremely valuable to Springhill Hospice as it allows us to plan for the future. The information below informs you how, after you have provided for all your loved ones, you can leave a gift to us - and please remember that absolutely every gift left to the Hospice can help us to help others.

How do I go about making a Will?

Making a Will is not complicated or time-consuming and the costs may be far less than you might think. It is the only way to ensure that your wishes are respected in full. For professional advice we would strongly recommend that you visit your solicitor but here are some brief guidelines to help you prepare some necessary details.

Work out the sum of your estate by listing all your assets (property, savings, jewellery etc) and subtracting all your liabilities (mortgage, debts etc) to calculate your estate total. Next, decide how you would like your assets and possessions to be divided amongst your family and friends. If at this point you do choose to leave a legacy or gift to Springhill Hospice there are different ways for you to do so.

  • A Residuary Gift - the gift of the whole of, or proportion of, your estate
  • A Pecuniary Gift - the gift of a set sum of money
  • A Specific Gift - the gift of a specific item such as a piece of jewellery, an antique or even a house

What if I already have a Will?

It is very important that you keep your Will up-to-date. Altering an existing Will can be done simply by adding a separate legal document called a codicil. Again, consulting with a solicitor is the best way to add a codicil and ensure that it is legally binding.

How do I word a legacy or codicil?

To ensure that no problems arise when the Will is executed, the wording used must include the name of the charity your are leaving your bequest to, in our case Springhill Hospice (Rochdale), and its registered charity number – ours is 701798.

Below is a suggestion on how to word a legacy to Springhill Hospice, but we do strongly recommend that you also consult a solicitor to ensure that the Will and any codicil is legally binding so that your wishes are carried out.

"I give to Springhill Hospice (Rochdale), registered charity no. 701798, (either)...

  • the sum of £ (insert sum) (or) (insert specific gift e.g. jewellery) (or)
  • all the residue of my estate (or)
  • one (insert a share e.g. 5%) share of the residue of my estate for its general purposes

...and I direct that the receipt of the Finance Manager or other proper person at Springhill Hospice shall be full and sufficient discharge for the said legacy."
