The Margaret Geoghegan Education Centre
Set in the grounds of Springhill Hospice, the Education Centre opened in August 2001 and was built and equipped from National Lottery money. The centre has a good-sized classroom and a well-equipped library.

The aim of all courses and workshops facilitated in the centre is to improve knowledge and understanding of the muti-dimensional topic that is Palliative Care.
Priority for training is to meet the needs of our own staff and volunteers. However we also teach staff from other hospices, hospitals, GP’s, Community, Social Services and Nursing Homes. The facilities are also available for hire.

Courses Available in 2008:
CORE THEMES IN PALLIATIVE CARE (Level 2 and 3)
Starting 31 March & October (date to be arranged) - This is an 8 week programme (one day a week) including a one week placement.
Facilitated jointly by Springhill and Wigan and Leigh Hospices and accredited by Manchester Metropolitan University within an undergraduate Professional Development Degree Programme, this programme is for any professional working in Palliative Care ie., Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Chaplains, Social work.
Course content includes: Philosophy of Palliative Care, Loss and Grief, Symptom Management, Communication, Spirituality, Complementary Therapy, Politics and Ethics.
FOUNDATIONS OF PALLIATIVE CARE
Starting 2 September 2008 for 5 weeks, one half day a week.
The course is designed for Health Care Assistants working within the Hospice or Care Home setting.
Course content includes: Communication, Pain and Symptom Management and Bereavement Care, Disease process (MND, Parkinson's and MS) plus understanding some drug side effects.
ADVANCED COMMUNICATION SKILLS
26 - 28 May 2008
3 half day pilot programme aimed at Senior Health Care Professionals covering Effective Communication, the Principles of Assessment & Interview and Improving Communication through Interactive Demonstration
LOSS AND BEREAVEMENT
8, 15, 22,29 July 2008
4 half days, aimed at both qualified and unqualified staff, to raise awareness of anticipatory grief, types of loss,the grieving process, spirituality and survival.
CARERS DROP-IN PROGRAMME
A Carers drop in programme running Tuesdays in October 2008 starting 7 October for one hour between 2 and 4 pm.
This is for relatives and carers of persons with a life limiting disease.
Speakers include a solicitor, Doctor, Chaplin and past Carer
SYMPTOM MANAGEMENT WORKSHOPS
Two 5 week programmes, 1-2 hour sessions held in the afternoon & repeated in the evening, in Spring and Autumn (dates to be advised)
Topics include, Palliative Care Emergencies, Management of Pain, Breathlessness, Nausea & Vomiting & Lymphoedema
The speakers are Palliative Care Specialist Doctors and Nurses
